Hi.
I've been thinking about this for a while.
On monday 15th I want to ride from Selby to Manchester as thats when I am moving and my parents take me stuff in the car and I want to ride there. On the day of one of the rides someone was talking to me telling me the best route, cant remember who it was, but was hard to take it in especially on the move. Anyway I've been looking at maps but I really dont know the best way, the only bit I think I will have to go on is the A62 (I think).
Anyway if possible is there anyone who could help me get a route together? I gonna use Google Earth and Bikely to draw the route, can be up to 150 miles, its only 68 on the M62 so I'm guessing it wont be massivly longer on roads suitable for bicycles and am aware its very busy on the roads around leeds and all that.
Thanks
Will.

try the routefinder on theaa.com you can put loads of "via's" in so you can avoid motorways etc (best if you have a map in front of you too so you know where to go via!)

There is a Trans Pennine cycle route (Route 62) that runs from Selby to Stockport (which is just south of Manchester).
Not ridden it myself but it promises to be "mapped and signed all the way, mainly traffic free and is surprisingly level considering the dramatic scenery along the way"
http://www.transpenninetrail.org.uk/
or the Sustrans site has info on other cycle routes

Hmmm, might have to get a propor map of that!, looks a nice long route.
Allthough I'm guessing it wont all be suitable for road bikes, is there any tyres for road bikes so they can go off road for long periods and on dirt/gravel aswell? Like ones with nobbles on?

Have often ridden to Manchester at Xmas on the family visiting circuit. Don't know about route 62, but it is hard to complete the ride without some busy stretches. My favorite way is to head out via Featherstone and across Emsley Moor. Cup of tea in Sid's cafe in Holmfirth then Holme Moss and great descent to Crowden, over to Glossop then into Manchester via Charlesworth etc. After Charlesworth it gets a bit grim, but you're nearly there and largely going downhill. There maybe a converted railway line for the last bit, but have never found it. The whole thing is 80-90 miles depending where in Manchester you finish (its a big place).
You'll need a map - it'll be a bundle of Landrangers, so suggest you compromise and just use the OS North of England map (1:200000).
Have fun.

I'll end up finishing like 3mins walk from the city center hopefully.
The route sounds good, always wanted to go past that massive mast wondered what it would be like close up, can see it from manchester and can see it from wistow, it makes the distance seem alot shorter
I'll look on the tinternet for that OS map and get one ordered.

you'd need a very tall periscope to see the mast from Manchester, but I know what you mean...

Its only 30 mins out of manchester to see the tower.

Is that what I need? Norther england on that? 5 quid for abit of paper with some lines on seems a rip off to me.

That's the one, number 4. Its £5 well spent in my view; every time you get back from a clubrun, look up where you've been - its the best method to learn your way around.
The 1:50k Landrangers have far more detail but obviously cover a much smaller area, so you'd end up having to carry 4-5 for a straight out journey like this.

I'll get one of those ordered in a couple of days and hopefully will be able to a course that I can take.

I got the 1:250 000 scale.
Anyway I'm in Manchester now and its a pile of crap for cycling in, I'm wanting to get into the hills or something, like the pennines but I havent a clue whats the best anyone have an idea? I am also planning to cycling back home sometime next week for something to do.
I worked out how to get to leeds but the inner ring road turns into a motorway

Loads of places within an easy rail journey of Manchester which will give you access to some hilly country for riding - e.g. Chinley, Glossop or Macclesfield for the Peak District, or somewhere like Stalybridge, Hadfield or Huddersfield for the Pennines.

Will, there's a Uni cycling club. I'd guess these guys can show you the best routes out of the city.

Yea but I cant join the Uni club surely since I don't go to Manchester Uni.
Seems like Google found me a decent route when I selected walking and not car, going to print it off and try it next week, should be easy getting to huddersfield and back.
