On the first day of the cultural festival leading up to the Tour De France’s ‘Grand Depart’, William Fotheringham, the Guardian’s cycling editor, provides a gripping insight into modern cycling. Racing Hard is an account of two decades of triumph, tragedy and scandal, from Bradley Wiggins to Lance Armstrong.
Since 1994, William has covered 19 Tours de France and four Olympic Games. He launched the magazine Procycling in 1998, and has written best-selling biographies of Tom Simpson, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx. He has been at the forefront of cycling journalism for the last twenty years. He has seen, first hand, the passion and human cost of people driven by a will to win. Racing Hard is a no-holds-barred survey of the high and lows of the world’s most demanding sport. In this special talk for York Literature Festival 2014, William shares his insights into the world of sport at the highest level of competition.
‘One of the most highly respected of all the journalists on the cycling scene.’ Sir Chris Hoy
